Intermediate/Senior Software Engineer, Backend

Full-Time in Toronto, ON - Remote OK

This posting is for Sodatone, Warner Music Group's global A&R data analytics platform. Sodatone is a Toronto-based startup that WMG acquired in 2018, and continues to operate as a founder-led, independently-run division of WMG.

About Us

Sodatone helps talent scouts around the world find the best undiscovered artists through data analytics and machine learning.

There are two core components to our technology:

The Sodatone Platform: The industry’s most comprehensive data analytics and visualization platform, used by the most influential people in music. They depend on it to find emerging talent that deserves their attention, and monitor critical insights and data on their own roster of artists.

Sodatone AI: Using deep learning, predictive modelling, and our ever-growing database of billions of data points, we’re developing algorithms that use social, streaming, and concert data to find the next Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran.

Help us find and share the music that will be heard, loved, and remembered. At Sodatone, you’ll help shape culture globally.

The Role

The music landscape is constantly changing. That means discovering and ingesting new data sources, designing a scalable data architecture around them, and using that data to ship new features for our users. That’s where you come in.

We’re looking for an intermediate/senior level software engineer who:

  1. Is passionate about music
  2. Enjoys and excels in backend development (but wouldn't be shy diving into the frontend from time to time)
  3. Loves to invent creative solutions to tackle big, loosely-defined problems
  4. Thrives in a small team environment

Here’s a taste of what you’ll be doing:

  • Developing large-scale crawling, ingestion, and processing pipelines to power our Platform and AI
  • Writing complex queries over our terabyte-scale database to extract insights from that data
  • Using those insights to design and implement backend APIs to power new features for the Sodatone Platform
  • Building automation tools to make sure our systems remain operational, healthy, and scalable as we add new features
  • Taking on a managerial/leadership role as we grow

Tech Stack

  • Backend: Ruby on Rails
  • Frontend: Typescript, React
  • Machine learning: Python, Spark, Tensorflow, Keras
  • PostgreSQL, TimescaleDB, Snowflake, Elasticsearch, Redis, Docker
  • AWS (EC2, RDS, S3, Kinesis, ECR, Fargate, DMS), Ubuntu

Note that proficiency in all of the above is not required! As long as you have strong programming fundamentals, we'll teach you the rest.

Required Skills

  • 3+ years of professional experience building data-intensive web applications, SQL, and working with 3rd party APIs.
  • Strong understanding of database design principles and optimization techniques
  • Experience drawing insight from data: formulating hypotheses, applying basic mathematics to validate them, and using intuition to guide further investigation
  • Proven ability to prototype, ask for feedback, and iterate quickly
  • A love of music!

Bonus Points For

  • Experience with AWS
  • Experience with an MVC application framework
  • A body of work (not necessarily open source) that you’d be proud to show us during an interview, preferably one that’s reached real users
  • Ideally, you’ve built an exciting SaaS product and loved the satisfaction that comes with knowing that people around the world are using what you’ve created

Additional Info

  • Sodatone was founded in 2016, and was acquired by Warner Music Group in 2018. We're an independently-run division of WMG - we make all product decisions, set our own deadlines, and remain founder-led. In our view, it's the best of both worlds - we're a small team where you'll have lots of autonomy and impact, but without the traditional risks of a startup.
  • We're currently fully-remote. Once the COVID-19 pandemic has subsided, we will have a flexible working arrangement, with a mix of onsite and remote work based on your preferences. Our office is located at Yonge/Bloor in downtown Toronto.
